Art Therapy Is Psychotherapy… With A More Meaningful Impact
Every so often I get asked What is Art Therapy and sometimes What is the difference between Art Therapy and Psychotherapy. Art Therapy IS a form of Psychotherapy. Art Psychotherapy is different from traditional verbal psychotherapy due to the fact that along with talking about a person’s issues we use imagery, or art to express the self in all its varying dimensions of consciousness.
This IS A BIG DEAL!!!!! Why? because we all know we have a conscious awareness of a lot of information, BUT we also have an unconscious level of existence. This is where the mysteries of life reside!
Not just suppressed emotions and thoughts, but additionally perceptual feelings, visions and experiences sometimes not easily explained away through intellectual understanding. Art Psychotherapy allows for the expression of these “altered states of life”. Imagination opens the doors to different worlds and for anyone struggling with substance use or the burgeoning application of Psychedelic Medicine this could be a game changer!
You don’t have to use an external substance, but you might, to access the profound experiences that exist. Knowing how to tap into them when you are NOT using a substance can be very empowering and revelatory!!!! Art Psychotherapy is all about integrating the full dimensions of consciousness, learning to harness the newfound power…and transform conflict into peace!
This means that anyone can learn about the many facets of life within the safety of a Creative Sanctuary….learn to identify what they feel…and learn to use the newfound knowledge to heal themselves and our world.
